Big 10K

30 07 2012

What a fun race! I loved everything about it. This was the inaugural Big 10K and they did a fantastic job. You would never know it was an inaugural race. I ran it with two of my favorite race buddies, Mo and Kelsey. We prepared for the race by eating cheese fondue and burgers on the grill while watching the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Maureen, Me and Kelsey representing Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State

The course was pretty simple. It was an out and back that started at Soldier Field and went south. Right before the turn-around there was an optional water slide. Mo is the only one of us who went on it. They also had one at the finish line. All along the course you could hear different Big Ten fight songs which was fun. At the finish line there was a big tailgate, which included tents from each school. I wandered over to the Wisconsin one as any good Badger alum would and found Heisman winner Ron Dayne. Yay!

I had some fun with my bib.

I have two of these now.

I didn’t check my 10K times until much later and then realized this was PR for me. Mind you I haven’t raced a 10K since 2009 so I was very much hoping for a PR. When we finally have not 75+% humidity I expect to get a killer PR. All in all, this was a great race and I will for sure do it again.

Rose Bowl 2012

13 01 2012

It was amazing. I loved every moment of it (except for the loss, but more on that later). As a fan of a Big Ten team every season starts out with hopes of going to the Rose Bowl, the Grandaddy of them all. This is something Marie and I have talked about since meeting as random freshman roommates. All these years later she is my best friend. She is like a sister. When the Badgers won the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game it was like everything came together. We had chatted quite a bit the week before. I had stated I wasn’t going to spend the money to watch the Badgers lose to Oregon, but I changed my mind and I put my name in for tickets. Sometime last spring I donate $50 to the UW Athletic Department so that I could get tickets to football games this fall. This qualified me for tickets directly from the ticket office.

Best email ever. I jumped out of bed at 6:30 in the morning and couldn’t call Marie because she lives on the west coast an that would just be mean. It was all a blur. We got the tickets. I booked a flight to LA. We bought tickets to the official Wisconsin Badger Tailgate. We found a good deal on a rental car. And then Marie and I chatted daily until we left for LA.

I flew out on New Year’s Eve. I was tired and sick when I arrived. My evening was food, nap, rally. There is no way I would have ever made it to midnight on the west coast had I not napped. Marie’s friends hosted a small gathering which was perfect. Some food, some music, some drinks, Apples-to-Apples, and neighbors setting off illegal fireworks at midnight.

We went out for champagne brunch on New Year’s Day and then wandered around Hollywood. We saw the Chinese Theaters, we saw lots of the stars.

Hollywood!

There were Badger and Duck fans everywhere. Honestly I’m surprised neither of us ran into someone we knew. We were all tired. We spent the evening sitting around chatting. We roasted marshmallows. It was a great New Year’s Day.

GAME DAY

We woke up early, really early to head to Pasadena. The driver over was quite easy until we were about .7 miles from the stadium. We sat and sat and sat and dealt with dumbass drivers who don’t understand merging or common courtesy (This was fans for both teams). Finally we figured out we could go a different way to park at the stadium, not try and park for the parade.

I don’t even know how to describe the whole day. It was awesome. It was so much fun and I got to share it all with one of my best friends in the world.  We walked to the Rose Parade, which was totally worth it, met some nice locals (USC fans) who shared random facts about the parade, and enjoyed the morning as it warmed up.

After the parade we were off to the Official Wisconsin Huddle (translation: beer, brats and Badger fans). This turned out to be worth every penny. It was so much fun to enjoy 80 degree weather, drink beer, and chat with Marie. We did finally run into people we know. We made new friends, which is always easy among Badger fans.

Yeah, we're cute.

Most amazing game of flip cup ever.

Bucky!

Best buddies!

Go Badgers!

While the outcome of the game was disappointing the actual game was awesome. Our boys played so well. It was an amazing game of football. The Ducks just outplayed the Badgers in the fourth quarter. The Badgers played to their potential this year. They played well. I don’t feel like they left anything out there like last year. Sure, I wanted them to win, but this wasn’t a bad loss. It wasn’t embarrassing.

Final Score: Oregon 45Wisconsin 38

Thank you Badgers for an amazing experience. You will be back. I will be back.

Thank you to Marie for so much fun. I love you. I miss you and I am so glad I did this with you.

I am already counting down to the 2012 season.

Badger for life.

Three Things Thursday

12 01 2012

1. I said I was going to not over schedule myself this year. I have already failed miserably. I am busy every weekend this month. Oops. I swear I will get better at this. I need a weekend at home every now and again. Instead I apparently try to fit in as much as possible. This weekend includes dog sitting, trail running, a bridal shower, a possible 5K and Madison.

2. I’m going to Madison this weekend to go to a Badger basketball game with Jen on Sunday. I can’t wait. They remembered how to play tonight and beat a good team so I am a little less nervous for Nebraska at home. On top of Badger basketball we get to watch the Packers, chat about tris, ragnar, Revenge and who knows what else. I haven’t seen her since the Indiana football game.

3. Winter is finally here! I love snow. I love winter. I do not enjoy driving in the snow. I’m actually a little disappointed in how bad the roads still were at 8:30. Come on Wisconsin, you have the plows. I wish I could work from home tomorrow, but I do not have that luxury.

Chicago’s Perfect 10

14 11 2011

Another great race with another running friend. I signed up for this race when Mo sent me a link about it. I figured $23 for a 10 miler, why not? By the time the race came around I was thinking why on earth did I sign up for this?

I made a ridiculous list of goals for the race, packed in a hurry Friday morning, sat in a never ending Friday afternoon meeting, and finally got on the road to Mo’s house. Thankfully it was an uneventful drive. Upon arrival went out for pizza and beer. Mo and I ordered 22 oz Fat Tires, her BF settled for a normal size beer. What? We were carb loading.

Race morning was an EARLY morning. We got up at 4:30 and went on our way to Navy Pier. Mind you, a whole 3 days before the race the race director sent out and email and told us the race was starting an hour earlier. This was supposed to be an 8:00am start. Nope, 7:00am. Fortunately Mo knows all the ins and outs of races in Chicago so knew that parking at Navy Pier could be a mess if we didn’t get there early. Packet pickup was ridiculously easy. We had to get Mo’s cousin’s bag too. She got sick so couldn’t run the 10K, but still wanted her shirt.

We went back to the car and both of us went back and forth on layers. I ended up running in crops and a long sleeve Nike layer with gloves. I kept the gloves on for about half the race. As we were waiting inside Mo asked me how fast I was going to run, which I had only kind of thought about. She decided to run with me so for the second race in a row I got to run with a friend. This is awesome. We were pretty darn consistent.

Mile 1 8:42
Mile 2 8:38
Mile 3 8:34
Mile 4 8:51
Mile 5 8:38
Mile 6 8:37
Mile 7 8:59 (Two water stops within the mile)
Mile 8 8:43
Mile 9 8:48
Mile 10 7:53
Last 0.06 came in at a 6:55 pace!

Overall average pace: 8:38!

And I just realized I am missing a mile in there. I will need to go back and see what I am missing. I found my missing mile. I did run all 10 miles, 10.06 according the the Garmin. And I have my official overall time of 1:26:54. Mo came in at 1:26:52 and some other woman in our age group managed to finish at 1:26:53.

This was faster than the Army Ten Miler (barely, but it was).  I went into it with way less pressure on myself. It was a simple course that started and ended at Navy Pier and ran south on the Lakefront. Thankfully the wind didn’t kick in until later in the day. The wind that we had was at our back on the return, which was fantastic.

10 Miles goes by really quickly when you have an awesome friend to chat with. I couldn’t really tell you everything we talked about, but it was so much fun. When we hit one mile to go Mo asked me if I wanted to push it. Um, yes. Certainly looks like we did. The medals were cool and the ribbon has the date on it. In addition to the medals we received coupons for free McGriddles. I honestly didn’t know what makes up a McGriddle, but we were hungry. We paid for parking so it was easy to get out of the Navy Pier parking lot.

Once back at Mo’s house we showered and turned on GameDay. What else would we do? We waited until her BF got home and then went to eat and watch football and drink beer. i was a happy Badger fan long before they even took the field. Penn State and Ohio State lost, which was exactly what the Badgers needed. The Badger game was so exciting I fell asleep during the second quarter and didn’t wake up until after half time. Another friend of theirs joined us for football watching and dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings. I shared the awesomeness of Untapped with Mo, which meant we had to look up what badges we could earn. I may have been the first to pass out on the couch. This is what happens when you do that:

It gets posted on twitter of course

At some later point I was told to go up to bed. Apparently 3 of the 4 of us had fallen asleep on the couches. What can I say? I was up at 4:30 and there were no good football games on at that point.

My body apparently hates me and woke my up at 7:00am. Thanks Twitter for amusing me while everyone else was still sleeping. The big plans for Sunday were pancakes and then more football. They have the RedZone channel. I miss it. NFL TV contracts suck. On Saturday I can flip between as many games as I want and on Sunday they are so limited.

Basically this was a perfect weekend. I ran a great race, I got to hang out with Mo all weekend, I got to relax and the drive both directions was uneventful.

Thank you Mo!
