Another Year Older

20 03 2013

Today celebrates another birthday. I love birthdays. I love getting to celebrate with friends and family; lots of food and treats. This year I realized I really am growing up. It’s funny that at certain ages you think you are all grown up. I look back at 18 or 21 and realized how little I was aware of. When my parents asked me what I wanted for my birthday the discussion was around a new vacuum cleaner, a Home Depot gift card and other things along this line. Who knew my late twenties would finally be when I started feeling like a grown up. I have no fears about turning 28. Another year older doesn’t bother me. (Let’s see what I say in two years, but as of right now 30 doesn’t scare me). I’m good with where my life is at right now. I have wonderful friends and a great family.

Instead of a baby picture this year I dug up a few from my 21st birthday. I was unlucky and turned 21 the Monday after spring break. Of course that didn’t stop us from celebrating. On the Friday of that week my wonderful friends managed to pull off a double surprise birthday for me and one of my roommates. Neither one of us had any idea. It was a blast. There was probably too much tequila and lots of dancing. Great way to celebrate.

I think this was my first legal drink: a margarita at Fridas.

Best Friends

There was a lot of tequila and a lot of dancing. I assume this is tequila being wiped off my arm.

One of my favorites. Still friends with all of these ladies.

Brazil: our first day in Rio

7 02 2013

First off I can’t imagine being here with anyone other than Marie. As we sat over our dinner chatting we realized how long we’ve known each other and how much of becoming who we are we did together. She is as close to a sister as I will ever have.

We arrived around mid-day Rio time, which is 4 hours different than home, an hour more than I was expecting. We arranged for a driver for safety reasons (Marie’s dad insisted), which turned out to be great. We finally made it out of baggage claim and customs to a sign that read “Mrs. Marie Vicksta”, which I enjoyed. Once we made it to the apartment it was shower and regroup time.

We ventured out to get Reales, which was way harder than expected. Both of us have traveled out of the country before and never had trouble getting foreign cash. Today was a disaster. I think 6 banks later we finally got cash. We were hungry, tired and pissed off at this point. Finally we bought some chips and water and wandered back to our apartment. Food helped, we were able to function.

Next up, see the beach. We got some beers on the beach and it was magical. We walked the beach and the ordered caipirinhas, which were amazing. Best one I’ve had in 7 years, which was the last time I was in South America.

Next up, dinner. Thankfully they had a menu in English. My brain is a crazy swirl of French and Spanish, neither if Erich are Portuguese, nor helpful. I can’t pronounce anything nor can I understand anything. I can kind of read things. Dinner was good. We had cod balls and flank steak with what was supposedly chimichuri sauce. It was not, but it was good and the cod balls were amazing.

We hit the market on the way back to get breakfast food and beer. And now that it’s almost 11 this time zone we’re ready to pass out.

I’ll try for more photos tomorrow. I got a bunch in my camera but have no way to upload them.

Lakefront Marathon: Spectator edition

9 10 2012

I wish I wanted to run. I wish I wasn’t injured. I wish I hadn’t gotten sick right before the Madison Mini. I wish I knew how to get back on track.

I won’t go on and on for several paragraphs whining and bitching because even I don’t want to read that crap. Instead I will talk about last Sunday, the Lakefront Marathon.

This past weekend I cheered for friends running the Lakefront Marathon. I forgot how much fun it is to spectate at a marathon. I forgot how much fun it is to support your friends. I haven’t spectated a marathon since Marine Corps in 2010 where I spent all day out cheering for and celebrating with friends.

This was a race I was supposed to run. I was supposed to attack 26.2 again. Several weeks ago I decided not to run it. I was going to run it with my totally amazing friend Sara. When I decided not to run it I promised her I would be out there to support her. It was such a fun day to be out cheering and supporting. Sara shaved 20 minutes of her time and broke 4 hours. When I received the email with her finish time I almost cried. In fact, I teared up and couldn’t wait to give her a giant hug.

In addition to Sara having a good day, so did a whole bunch of other friends. It was a cold day to spectate, but I wouldn’t trade anything for being out there cheering.

I just wish it had inspired me to get my ass off the couch. I guess it kind of did. I’m just so damn annoyed with my hamstring that I don’t want to run 2 miles. I want to run 12. That is until I start running. Then I don’t want to be anywhere but my couch.

Happy Birthday Marie!

4 10 2012

Happy Birthday to one of my best friends in the whole world. To the friend who is basically a sister to me. A friend I cannot imagine my life without. Thank you UW Housing for assigning us as random roommates all those years ago. Happy birthday to the friend who lives 2000 miles away, but I can call any time of day or night.

TP’s Adventures in Wisconsin: Beer and Running

2 10 2012

Thai Phi has visited me three times since I moved home. She has been to Wisconsin three times in her life. What a great friend. And then on this trip she told me Wisconsin was one of her happy places. I’m still shocked I didn’t cry when she said that.

We had a great weekend of sitting on my porch drinking beer, running at Lapham Peak State Park, visiting the Wisconsin Cheese Mart and drinking more beer. It was a fantastic weekend and I will someday figure out a portal between Milwaukee and DC. Someday.

Select photos  from out adventures. Also, I need to run the trails more.

This was a great distraction from the fact that I have’t run more than three miles at a time in over two weeks.

Fun in Virginia Beach

6 09 2012

We arrived late Friday night. We had to check out the beach. And the blue moon.

Me and TP. Someday we will figure out how to teleport or something to make DC and Milwaukee closer.

Hot and humid weather isn’t so bad when you’re at the beach. Emma called this shark dodging. I think we were just hot.

The whole crew. Some of them (okay most of them) even ran a half marathon earlier in the day.

We ate healthy all weekend. See, cheese.
