Spotlight Questions

5 03 2013

My coworker who writes our internal newsletter asked me to be the staff member to answer the Spotlight Questions this month. I’ve never done one of the answer 7 or 11 or whatever questions blog posts, but thought since I was answering these anyways I would share them. I also won’t tag anyone in this and actually don’t need anyone to copy these. I’m mostly just bored at work right now.

What do you like most about living in Wisconsin?

Being close to my family and being able to go to Badger games.

Is your favorite meal something you cook, or something you go out for, and what is it?

My favorite meal is almost anything my mom cooks. She makes phenomenal food from the basics to gourmet.

What was a hobby you had as a child you don’t have anymore?

Swimming. I used to swim 5-6 days a week from age 9-18. Now I don’t remember the last time I was in a pool. I still love the smell of a pool though.

What were you doing prior to working at COMPANY?

Graduate school in Washington, DC.

If you could go back and talk to yourself the day after you graduated from high school, what would you tell yourself?

You aren’t even close to being grown up. Enjoy this summer, but it’s not the end of your youth.  Also, you won’t regret choosing to go to school in Madison. It turns out to be one of the best decisions you ever made.

Another Year Over

31 12 2012

I guess I can reflect a bit since it is New Year’s Eve and all.

On my way into work today I realized I was offered this job two years ago. That phone call started me on a crazy journey. There is no way that I could have predicted the last two years.

One year ago I was on my way to LA for the Rose Bowl with my very best friend in the entire world. Now that is something we started talking about doing when we were students in Madison. It took a lot of years, but we made it and we loved every moment (except the final score).

Today, I am stuck working on this pointless Monday that should be a holiday, but I refuse to waste a vacation day on it. And because of that I am blogging.

Over this past year I went from having a job to actually enjoying my job. I have coworkers that are friends now. I have a boss who wants to help me grow as an employee and a person. I feel like I am getting more towards what I want to be doing. And my job hasn’t made me cry this year.

I bought a house this year. I ran a bunch of races. I loved running. I hated running. I traveled from coast to coast (with suitcases full of beer and cheese). I made new friends. I spent time with old friends. I spent time with family. I visited breweries and vineyards. I cooked new meals. I adopted a second cat.

It was a busy year. It was a fun year. Here’s to another great year.

Tomorrow is New Year’s Day or as I am calling it, Rose Bowl Day! Go Badgers!

Happy New Year Everyone!

Big 10K

30 07 2012

What a fun race! I loved everything about it. This was the inaugural Big 10K and they did a fantastic job. You would never know it was an inaugural race. I ran it with two of my favorite race buddies, Mo and Kelsey. We prepared for the race by eating cheese fondue and burgers on the grill while watching the Olympic Opening Ceremony.

Maureen, Me and Kelsey representing Michigan State, Wisconsin, and Ohio State

The course was pretty simple. It was an out and back that started at Soldier Field and went south. Right before the turn-around there was an optional water slide. Mo is the only one of us who went on it. They also had one at the finish line. All along the course you could hear different Big Ten fight songs which was fun. At the finish line there was a big tailgate, which included tents from each school. I wandered over to the Wisconsin one as any good Badger alum would and found Heisman winner Ron Dayne. Yay!

I had some fun with my bib.

I have two of these now.

I didn’t check my 10K times until much later and then realized this was PR for me. Mind you I haven’t raced a 10K since 2009 so I was very much hoping for a PR. When we finally have not 75+% humidity I expect to get a killer PR. All in all, this was a great race and I will for sure do it again.

Rose Bowl 2012

13 01 2012

It was amazing. I loved every moment of it (except for the loss, but more on that later). As a fan of a Big Ten team every season starts out with hopes of going to the Rose Bowl, the Grandaddy of them all. This is something Marie and I have talked about since meeting as random freshman roommates. All these years later she is my best friend. She is like a sister. When the Badgers won the inaugural Big Ten Championship Game it was like everything came together. We had chatted quite a bit the week before. I had stated I wasn’t going to spend the money to watch the Badgers lose to Oregon, but I changed my mind and I put my name in for tickets. Sometime last spring I donate $50 to the UW Athletic Department so that I could get tickets to football games this fall. This qualified me for tickets directly from the ticket office.

Best email ever. I jumped out of bed at 6:30 in the morning and couldn’t call Marie because she lives on the west coast an that would just be mean. It was all a blur. We got the tickets. I booked a flight to LA. We bought tickets to the official Wisconsin Badger Tailgate. We found a good deal on a rental car. And then Marie and I chatted daily until we left for LA.

I flew out on New Year’s Eve. I was tired and sick when I arrived. My evening was food, nap, rally. There is no way I would have ever made it to midnight on the west coast had I not napped. Marie’s friends hosted a small gathering which was perfect. Some food, some music, some drinks, Apples-to-Apples, and neighbors setting off illegal fireworks at midnight.

We went out for champagne brunch on New Year’s Day and then wandered around Hollywood. We saw the Chinese Theaters, we saw lots of the stars.

Hollywood!

There were Badger and Duck fans everywhere. Honestly I’m surprised neither of us ran into someone we knew. We were all tired. We spent the evening sitting around chatting. We roasted marshmallows. It was a great New Year’s Day.

GAME DAY

We woke up early, really early to head to Pasadena. The driver over was quite easy until we were about .7 miles from the stadium. We sat and sat and sat and dealt with dumbass drivers who don’t understand merging or common courtesy (This was fans for both teams). Finally we figured out we could go a different way to park at the stadium, not try and park for the parade.

I don’t even know how to describe the whole day. It was awesome. It was so much fun and I got to share it all with one of my best friends in the world.  We walked to the Rose Parade, which was totally worth it, met some nice locals (USC fans) who shared random facts about the parade, and enjoyed the morning as it warmed up.

After the parade we were off to the Official Wisconsin Huddle (translation: beer, brats and Badger fans). This turned out to be worth every penny. It was so much fun to enjoy 80 degree weather, drink beer, and chat with Marie. We did finally run into people we know. We made new friends, which is always easy among Badger fans.

Yeah, we're cute.

Most amazing game of flip cup ever.

Bucky!

Best buddies!

Go Badgers!

While the outcome of the game was disappointing the actual game was awesome. Our boys played so well. It was an amazing game of football. The Ducks just outplayed the Badgers in the fourth quarter. The Badgers played to their potential this year. They played well. I don’t feel like they left anything out there like last year. Sure, I wanted them to win, but this wasn’t a bad loss. It wasn’t embarrassing.

Final Score: Oregon 45Wisconsin 38

Thank you Badgers for an amazing experience. You will be back. I will be back.

Thank you to Marie for so much fun. I love you. I miss you and I am so glad I did this with you.

I am already counting down to the 2012 season.

Badger for life.

How did I get here?

29 12 2011

A year ago I found myself in tears frequently and in many inappropriate places: a bar, my part time job, on the metro. Reality would hit and I realized how few days and moments were left of my life in DC. The last time I was going to go to Happy Hour at a certain bar. The last time I would hang out with friends. I was unhappy about everything. I didn’t want to be moving to Wisconsin. I didn’t have a job lined up. I was moving back in with my parents, which was not something I ever imagined doing. I spent the end of 2010 in tears. I spent the beginning of 2011 in tears. I said goodbye to people that I consider some of my best friends. I moved into the unknown. I was starting over at 25 years old. This was not in my life plan. This was not something I fathomed.

It is almost the end of 2011 and I don’t know where the year went. I started a new job. I got a new apartment. I adopted a kitty. I met amazing people. I visited DC. I rediscovered my love for running, which was a much harder journey than I imagined. I visited my brother in France. I went to Oregon to visit my best friend. I went back to DC for my other best friend’s birthday. I went to Badger games. I went to Packer games. I spent time with my parents. I reconnected with friends in Milwaukee. I became a Half Fanatic. I ran from Madison to Chicago with total strangers and had a blast. I get to end the year with at the Rose Bowl with my best friend/college roommate. Something we have talked about since we met in the dorms as freshman. I raced with new running friends.

I am not afraid of 2012. I am ending 2011 on a high note. I am bursting into the new year with all kinds of fun plans. I will be going back to DC, but this time introducing my new running friends to my DC friends. I am running Ragnar Chicago again with all the wisdom we gained last year. So 2012, I welcome you with open arms. I am ready to take on whatever you throw at me.
